Charlotte Bronte's _Jane Eyre_ is up today. I was thinking of how when I was in 2nd grade I found out that we could choose our own books and control what we read. This was a vital change in my attitude towards reading, which had been adversarial. This book, which was NOT what I picked out in 2nd grade, follows the life of orphaned Jane as she moves from her abusive aunt's home, to an equally soul-crushing school for orphans, Lowood. Finally finding the equality and appreciation she wants, Jane lands a job as governess to a lovely little French girl at the abandoned Thornfield Estate. While there, the book becomes something of a mystery with Jane overhearing half spoken conversations and a mysterious laugh that echoes through the house from the forbidden attic hallway. When the master's secret comes to light Jane leave him at the alter to die on the moors. But with the help of family, and most importantly, her own talents of the mind, she comes around again.
Excellent book for all of my girls in class. I think that Jane's voice, demands of equality and dignity for the working classes, kindness and love to children and the infirmed, make this book one of the strongest and most important reads for a girl becoming a woman in 2013.
